This volume had its origins in a session presented to the Society of Biblical Literature in Washington in 2006 in order to examine the legacy of Peter Ackroyd to the field of biblical studies. Ackroyd's work stretched over a wide range of topics within Biblical Studies, notably study of prophetic literature and work on exile and restoration. This volume particularly focuses upon his work on the latter. L'homme biblique va à Dieu avec ses sens. Il travaille ses sens pour dire la beauté de la création et louer le Créateur, dans la littérature, le chant, la musique ou l'architecture du Temple et s'interroge sur la justesse de ses représentations du divin, jusqu'à s'interdire les images de Dieu : qui est ce Dieu qui se chante mais ne se représente pas ? La Bible comme littérature est matrice d'oeuvres d'art : au fil des siècles, les artistes proposent une "lecture" de la Bible créatrice de sens et de beauté, passant d'un mode d'expression, la littérature, à un autre : sculpture, vitrail, peinture (Chagall), musique (Bach, Messiaen).
